Red Dot Award: Brands & Communication Design

Successful vernissage

Communication design exhibition successfully opened

In the evening of 14 March 2019, a new exhibition with communication design opened at the Red Dot Design Museum Essen in Germany. The interest in the presentation was huge, as creative achievements from North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), the home of the Red Dot Design Museum, are in the focus of “Creative Exchange: World’s Best Communication Design and Highlights from NRW”. Around 100 guests joined the vernissage and, before the official start on the following day, gained an exclusive insight into the well-designed projects of the international creative scene. Still until 2 June 2019, the Red Dot winning works are presented in the design museum on the grounds of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Zollverein.

Red Dot CEO gave a word of welcome

Among the guests of the event were winners, designers, company representatives and design enthusiasts. They were welcomed by Professor Dr. Peter Zec, founder and CEO of the Red Dot Award. He thanked the guests for the great interest in the exhibition and started his welcoming speech with information on the competition in which the exhibited works were successful. Regarding the exhibition’s focus on works from North-Rhine Westphalia, he explained: “North-Rhine Westphalia is on the way up. This is why we set great value on the federals state when planning the exhibition. At 29%, almost one third of all German entries that won an award in 2018 was from our federal state – a very good performance. In 2015, this figure stood at 18%. This is a good indication that creativity is realised here.”

In order to get the guests in the right mood for the evening, Peter Zec presented selected films, showing the various facets of communication design and illustrating how to convey messages in a creative manner. He closed his welcome address by opening the exhibition and wished the attendants a lot of joy while discovering the exhibits as well as an interesting evening with inspiring conversations.

Convincing performances from NRW

The selection of Red Dot awarded works includes all of the projects that received a Red Dot: Best of the Best and a Red Dot: Grand Prix in the Red Dot Award: Communication Design 2018. Furthermore, it showcases selected successful pieces from North-Rhine Westphalia which were awarded between 2015 and 2018. The works were either created by designers from NRW or commissioned by companies which have their headquarters in the German federal state.

Winners discover projects first-hand

During the tour of the exhibition, the guests were given the possibility to convince themselves of the excellent design quality of the around 200 showcased creative works. Apart from online projects, posters and packaging, they discovered top quality communication design first-hand as touching the exhibits, such as annual reports and books, is allowed.

The audience also included laureates, among others Grey / KW43 Branddesign, beierarbeit, Morphoria, Fortuna Düsseldorf, Gira and Bielefelder Philharmoniker. They were pleased with the presentation of their works in the Red Dot Design Museum and used the event to exchange opinions about current trends with colleagues and get some inspiration.
