Maison & Objet 2015: “Formosa Forms” exhibition opened at trade fair in Paris
On 4 September 2015, the exhibition “Formosa Forms - Contemporary Tradition in Taiwanese Design”, organized by the Red Dot Design Museum Essen, was opened at the Maison & Objet trade fair in Paris, France. Until 8 September 2015, the exhibition documents current Taiwanese design developments which combine tradition and modernity by presenting selected products of seven national brands. On show are among others furniture, tableware, accessories, and lamps. The exhibition was commissioned by the Taiwanese Industrial Development Bureau of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Taiwan Design Center.
Well-known for its IT and bicycle industries, Taiwan ranks among the world market leaders in the product design sector. But there are also other creative fields which stand out with design quality and have not been discovered yet: artful tableware, sculptural home accessories and stylish furniture. With well-shaped and elaborate products, Taiwanese designers and manufacturers produce modern interpretations of their cultural roots. Without realising the origins, millions of people around the globe use the products from the insular state in the Western Pacific, which was formerly known as “Ilha Formosa” (beautiful island).
By showcasing finely shaped products of seven Taiwanese brands, the second part of the “Formosa Forms” exhibition series grants insights into contemporary tradition in Taiwanese design. The up-to-date exhibits prove both the contrast and the symbiosis of tradition and modernity and illustrate the present design understanding in Taiwan: In various products, timely interpretations of traditional elements as well as innovative techniques paired with established craftsmanship testify to the contemporary Taiwanese culture.
