General information about the Red Dot Design Award

The Red Dot Design Award is one of the most prestigious design competitions in the world. The competition is divided into three disciplines in order to be able to properly assess the diversity in the field of design:

• Red Dot Award: Product Design
• Red Dot Award: Brands & Communication Design
• Red Dot Award: Design Concept

The Red Dot Design Award looks back on almost 70 years of history: in 1955, a jury came together for the first time to assess the best designs of the time. In the 1990s, Red Dot CEO Professor Dr Peter Zec developed the name and brand of the award. Since then, the coveted “Red Dot” distinction has been the internationally recognised seal of outstanding design quality. The award winners are presented in the yearbooks, museums and online.

Information on the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2025

The Red Dot Award: Product Design is one of the most prestigious design competitions worldwide. Since 1955, it has recognised products that stand out for their exceptionally high design quality.

The independent Red Dot Jury assesses all entries based on four key principles of good design: the quality of function, the quality of seduction, the quality of use and the quality of responsibility.

In 2025, the jury consists of 43 experts from 21 countries, including designers, professors, journalists and consultants from various disciplines. Entries were submitted from over 60 countries and were carefully reviewed and discussed by the jurors.

Information on Red Dot Design Museum Essen

The Red Dot Design Museum Essen is the world’s largest museum for contemporary design. Located in the former boiler house of the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – it showcases over 2,000 award-winning products from more than 50 countries across 4,000 square metres of exhibition space.

The museum offers insights into the diversity and quality of current design – from everyday objects to cutting-edge innovations, all of which have received a distinction in the Red Dot Award: Product Design.

As a space for inspiration and dialogue, the museum is open to both design professionals and the general public. Winning products from the current competition year are featured in the exhibitions “Design on Stage” and “Milestones in Contemporary Design”.
