Interview with Lee Lok

What is one myth about design you would like to challenge?

The most urgent misconception I want to dispel is that the brighter the desk lamp, the better the lighting. This belief stems from early LED limitations, and ignores the inherent conflict of spectral biohazards. OLED technology is reshaping the fundamental principles of healthy lighting.

OLED fundamentally creates healthier light: its organic structure inherently compresses blue light peaks, cutting harmful (<450 nm) energy to <15% (vs. LED's 32%), and physically reducing the risk of retinal damage.

What is a non-design hobby or interest that impacts your creativity?

Having interests beyond design fuels creativity. Furniture collecting teaches elegant simplicity for complex problems; photography’s demanding light and composition shape product visual rhythm and emotional resonance; running tempers endurance, like conquering peaks, fortifying brand conviction. The convergence of interests guides me to create precise warmth at the intersection of technology and humanity.

What new ideas have you been investigating recently?

Seeking the essence of design, we have been exploring a new approach that focuses on the symbiotic relationship between lighting and furniture — something that goes beyond their static coexistence as two objects. Lighting can be designed to flow from the furniture's form and function, such as bookshelves that emit reading light. Furniture inherently provides structure, while lighting returns soulful care. When the two merge into a single entity, they are capable of achieving a functional yet emotional unity, creating organic lighting environments.
