Bamboo Shoots

In a new attempt to explore bamboo structure and technology, the unique “bamboo mortise” structure of Bamboo Shoots forms an important feature of its design. The physical characteristics of bamboo can be complementary to other materials. While wood is gentle and hard, bamboo has a language of materiality that is strong and tough. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, but the solution lies in bringing both materials into play to create a unique “bamboo mortise” structure. The flexible physical properties of bamboo as a material is used to create the unique curved corners of Bamboo Shoots. Using bamboo in this way also increases the structural strength. As the four legs of the bookshelf extend upwards by the layer, it also extends outwards and tilts slightly. An elegant variation of thickness is created by modifying the form’s thickness – from thin to thick to thin. The legs are also chamfered from the bottom to the top to highlight the characteristics of bamboo as a material.
