CLOUD SHADE

CLOUD SHADE is an outdoor cloud-shaped corridor. While providing shade from the sun, it also gives users the impression of relaxing in nature by emulating a giant 26-metre-long cloud. It features a roof composed of two layers of perforated plates with numerous holes. CLOUD SHADE was designed to supplement existing public rest areas. Unlike other rest areas that provide shade but block all sunlight, which creates a static environment, this structure allows moderate sunlight to pass through its perforated plates so that users can feel natural light even when in the shade. The design motif is inspired by the clouds visible when looking up from the forest. Because clouds regulate sunlight, a large perforated plate in the shape of a cloud was developed as a canopy to regulate sunlight under the rest facility. In addition, the irregular overlapping of the holes in the two layers of perforated plates produces various patterns of shade. One of the key features is how the position and shape of the shade change depending on the position of the sun. CLOUD SHADE is made of a large, streamlined perforated plate measuring 28 metres in length and 3.5 metres in height. The pergola, which is popular in Korea, is a monotonous design measuring 4 by 4 metres. For a unique design, we took inspiration from the shape of clouds and designed a large canopy to create a larger impact of sunlight and shade. The canopy is made by drilling a D70-sized circle into a stainless steel plate. Two perforated plates overlap to form the roof layer, and the circular positions of each plate were staggered to prevent direct sunlight and soften the shade.
