Created to mark the inauguration of Frankfurt’s new historical city centre, the light and media production “Constellations – A Symphony for the Frankfurt Altstadt” saw itself as a poetic homage to the contrasting and diverse metropolis. For the event, the live performance was impressively staged on the opening weekend which attracted around 280,000 visitors. A total of 110 drones equipped with LEDs performed a choreographic light show directly above the river Main, combined with specially composed music and spoken passages to pay homage to Frankfurt. The narrative of “Constellations” centred on prominent personalities and figures from the city, as well as historical milestones and landmarks. The sophisticated airborne choreography was particularly challenging as the stellar constellations, resulting from the position of the drones, had to be recognisable from as many different viewpoints as possible. The use of the latest technology helped create an iconographic performance that honoured Frankfurt’s cosmopolitan approach in a series of poetic images.
Statement by the Jury
“Constellations”, a perfectly planned and orchestrated drone choreography shown in the Frankfurt sky, exemplarily demonstrated that spectacular events are also possible without air pollution. It was comparable to gigantic fireworks, but less loud. This new approach towards using drones enables innovations such as three-dimensional effects as well as conveying messages.
