In their self-titled concept album, the US band Defeater tells the story of an African-American who fights as a soldier for his country in World War II. Yet upon returning home, he is discriminated against due to his skin colour and finally ends up living on the streets of New York as a homeless street musician. In collages set against a background of historical newspaper articles, these illustrations depict the dark plot in a graphically convincing way. The numerous typographical elements appear like fragments of song lyrics or handwritten notes by the protagonist.
