The weekly newspaper DIE ZEIT and the accompanying magazine ZEIT MAGAZIN stand for leisure, enjoyment and in-depth news. Recognising the growing need of readers for orientation in the digital space and with the aim of creating a coherent online platform that presents what is happening in the world in a form condensed to the essentials, DIE ZEIT app was developed to be that very place. Easy to understand and playful in navigation and operation, the app is defined by clarity to ensure a high level of reading pleasure on smartphones and tablets. The “Heute” (Today) page entices users to explore and discover with daily recommendations and at the same time offers a rich tapestry of images from the weekly newspaper. The issue’s table of contents functions like a carousel and can be browsed either along the sections from left to right or within a section from top to bottom. The most important articles are highlighted by micro-animations, multilevel entrances and warm colours. As a recognisable design heritage, the typography continues to be strongly emphasised, adding an extra aesthetic touch to the clear overall image.Statement by the juryThe design of the ZEIT app picks up on the renowned, traditional visual heritage of the respected weekly newspaper as well as its associated magazine and convinces with a high-quality digital experience.
