The Hakka people are considered to be simple, hospitable and hardworking. The book “Under the Sun” seeks to question the stereotypical perception of this Chinese ethnic group. The book cover is monochrome, as if to underscore the notion that the Hakka were rather simple people. Yet, the cover is composed of various layers, which alludes to complexity and depth, referencing to the lyrics of traditional Hakka ballads. By shifting these layers, the structure of the lyrics becomes deconstructed, and expressive typography or hidden words bestow a different, additional meaning to each track.
