The Freightliner Inspiration Truck is the first licensed autonomous commercial truck to operate on an open public highway in the United States. It operates at Level 3 of autonomous vehicle capabilities, enabling the driver to cede full control of all safety-critical functions under certain traffic or environmental conditions. The Freightliner promises to unlock autonomous vehicle advancements that reduce accidents, improve fuel consumption, cut highway congestion, and safeguard the environment.
The team was tasked to develop a futuristic tractor-trailer to support the first autonomous drive truck. The concept was to develop the truck exterior to appear as one solid shape. Gaps and joints were minimised; parts were meld and integrated into one continuous form; soft surfaces with few character lines contribute to the aerodynamic look; and the grille flows smoothly into the hood as one blended surface. The exterior lighting elements were developed to communicate the two operating modes: white lighting for manual driving and blue lighting for autonomous self-driving.
The interior creates a spacious and light environment supported by ambient lighting to convey a feeling of well-being. The use of authentic wood, leather and aluminium materials indicate high quality craftsmanship and clean design found in premium yachts. The unique rear seating layout orientates passengers to better support discussions and communications.
