The ergonomic Layer stool is designed to accommodate the organic curves of the human body and ensure comfort. Modern wood-bending techniques for creating such curves typically require specialised equipment such as a press or a higher level of woodworking skill, making these methods less accessible to the general public. On the other hand, parametric structures, which involve assembling multiple 2D-cut panels to form a curved surface, have the advantage of being achievable with only a few simple techniques. However, they too have the drawback of significant material waste depending on the design. To address the challenges of accessibility and material waste, an optimal parametric structure is developed. Users can modify the blueprints, tailor the curves to their body shape, and easily craft their own stool by using only a minimal amount of wood panels. The most notable feature of the Layer Stool is the curved top, which was designed using a surface generated in a computer programme. By extracting cross-sections of the curve at regular intervals and applying them to the blueprint, the components are arranged by the programme to maintain minimal gaps when aligned.
