The poster for the opera “Macbeth” by Giuseppe Verdi depicts the protagonist in Shakespeare’s drama as the wrong king. Since Macbeth has seized the crown wrongfully, this crown sits atop his head upside down, looking threatening and insinuating injury through its downward-pointing spikes. Macbeth is shown as a split personality: insecure, angry and in fear. His naked, defenceless body appears to be in the process of decomposing. Shakespeare’s play is thus epitomised in a single picture with dramatic effect.
