This packaging was created for the soundtrack to Metallica’s first 3D film release “Metallica Through the Never”, a fantasy narrative interspersed with live performances by the band. The design centres on an iteration of the iconic “M” in the band’s logo, originally designed by the lead singer James Hetfield. In a simplified form, it is used as a stencilled graffiti element, crossing out the word “Never”. Serving as visual shorthand for the movie’s title, this key visual also features on the CD and LP packaging and is included as a do-it-yourself stencil. The packaging likewise incorporates graphic references to all previous album designs.
