A staple food in Asia, rice is also one of the largest contributors to the food waste epidemic. The problem is a complex one, with factors such as portioning, individual appetites, and conflicting schedules contributing to the propensity of Asian households to discard perfectly good rice. Mirai goes beyond the mould – quite literally – to help tackle this issue. Inspired by the versatility of the staple food, Mirai is a rice cooker that stands out for its unique cooking pot, which features a moulded bottom that is designed to recook leftover rice into crispy rice snacks. Considered a delicacy in many Asian cultures, these snacks also offer a host of health benefits. A final step away from the conventional, a specially designed silicone rice scooper helps users easily extract the snacks from their cavities when done.
