Typographic Artwork

Relentless

Zurück Download

This three-dimensional typographic artwork was created with the intention of giving a voice to gravity and giving it the opportunity to play a role in delivering the message. Conceptually, the work arose from the mundane action of shuffling a stack of papers in a box and the typically familiar sound it makes when the papers move from left to right and vice versa. The work explores the ways that gravity is usually taken for granted and the impact that it has had on the typographical systems that designers use. Gravity itself thus becomes a designer by changing meaning and generating meaning at the same time. As the papers in the stack are printed on the cut edges and bevelled on one side, among other things, the back and forth movement of the papers causes a shift and distortion of the letters. It is thanks to gravity that the words “Falling into place, flushing neatly by my hand” are finally revealed.

Begründung der Jury

This work triggers real joy. It is so simple that even a child can understand how it works. Yet the underlying idea and the achieved effect are all the more enticing when the recipient of this aesthetically designed work realises that and how gravity is at work here in altering words and meanings. The implementation is proof of a high degree of creativity and craftsmanship.
