The New Normal proposes a set of food serving tools that provide an alternative way of portion estimation. It aims to help people learn and practise estimating healthy portion sizes of five basic food groups and permanently transform eating habits. Each tool matches the volume of a different hand size and gesture, and this is used to figure out food portions instead of calorie counting or measurement units.
Nutritionists would tell you to easily calculate food portions with your hands. For example, a fistful of carbohydrates, a palm of protein, a thumb of fat, a cupped hand of fruit and two handfuls of vegetables are recommended daily. The tools of The New Normal are meant to supplement the above method and help people apply it to their everyday eating habits and form a new memory that will lead to long-term changed behaviour. These tools come in five different standard ‘hand sizes’ (XS, S, M, L, XL) and simplifies the hand gestures. In this way, they are made to be functionally intuitive to a wide range of people.
