The “Track Back to” music project is a series of remix albums dedicated to the subject of sunset industries in Taiwan. The sounds and noises that the different artisans produce when working were recorded and mixed into different styles of songs. The albums are designed as an attempt to preserve the declining industries in Taiwan and enable people to experience them by bringing them back to the golden age of these waning industries. Three albums were produced covering the three industries of blacksmithing, tailoring and the making of religious statues and idols, corresponding to the three different music styles of “punk music”, “jazz / blues” and traditional “Nanguan music”. Each of the album cover designs highlights typical industry markers, such as heavy work in a dark woodcut style for the blacksmithing album. Each album contains four remix songs, a total of 12 songs comprise the series, and they were also put on a CD, which is located in the middle of the vinyl LP. In addition, matching the cover, a book was designed with photographs and interviews depicting the industries.

Statement by the Jury

“Track Back to” stands out for both its special packaging design and its ingenious content made of audio recordings covering various arts and crafts, each of which was mixed with and turned into a song of a distinctive musical style. The intention is to thus pay homage to the waning industries in Taiwan, a homage that also succeeds through the self-referential album covers and distinctive book supplements.
