After years of large, heavy amplifiers produced by traditional manufacturers of audio equipment, few have instead been going towards making premium, compact audio components. The manufacturer Enleum is emblematic of this approach. Based in San José, California, this high-end audio specialist develops compact amplifiers for purists with the objective of creating a user experience that delivers “music in its purest form”. In addition to offering acoustics with outstanding micro and macro dynamics, they also have a signature style. The latest model, the AMP-44R, appears to be floating thanks to a heavy component-encapsulating base in the centre of the unit. This effect is further enhanced by the central control knob and floating light display, creating a seamless user experience. The slim housing is made from high-quality, CNC-machined aluminium with no visible assembly screws. There are precision-machined heat sinks on the left- and right-hand sides, and cut-outs underneath, from which larger internal components are designed to protrude. These would usually be encased in the housing, thus contributing to the bulk of traditional amplifiers. Here, they are visible but at the same time functional and part of the design. Like almost no other detail, they represent Enleum’s purist approach to design. Another highlight in this regard is the single, central control knob on the front panel, finished by a renowned Korean traditional lacquer artist, which gives the chassis a touch of artistry. In contrast to the more common metal control elements, it is also pleasantly soft to the touch. “With the AMP-44R, Enleum has once again managed to balance form with function in a highly sophisticated way,” the jury concluded. “What is particularly impressive is how naturally and consistently modern precision production and artisanal highlights meld.” Ultimately, what mattered to Enleum, otherwise principally known as a manufacturer of amplifiers intended for either speakers or headphones, during the design of the AMP-44R, was to create the best possible solution for both. Thanks to advanced technology, this device now has double the amplifying capacity of its predecessor and its 30 per cent smaller footprint also makes it more compact.
