We encounter countless products that we take for granted every day. In many cases, we only actually notice them when they aren’t working properly. The Gemma drainage channel may be an everyday object, but its form and function are impressive in every respect. It allows the individual diamond-shaped elements that collectively function as a cover grating to be freely interlinked without any visible connection, giving them a floating and weightless appearance. Meticulous attention was paid to precision engineering so as to achieve the necessary stability and robustness, and to ensure that the water rapidly drains around the sides of the elements into the channel. It was particularly challenging to achieve the invisible connection of the diamond elements and the balance between material thickness and the very delicate tread pattern. Accessibility was another important consideration that was tested in the development process with walking aids and wheelchairs. Moreover, even though Gemma is a product that is literally “underfoot”, its unconventional appearance makes it an attractive piece of outdoor architecture that safely and effectively drains away accumulating water. The development challenges may remain hidden from the consumer, but they didn’t escape the notice of the Red Dot Jury experts: “Gemma’s aesthetic beauty immediately captivated us. On closer inspection, you can see the precise workmanship of the floating elements and the stable frame. As a complete package, the drainage channel is a particularly innovative solution that makes an unconventional and unexpected design statement.”
