To meet the exhibition needs of the ceramics programme, the School of Art at NCUST organised a team of faculty and students to restore a neglected campus hill slope. Combining art creation with labour, they created a multifunctional outdoor space for exhibitions, relaxation, and learning. This initiative beautified the campus, gave students a space to showcase their works, and fostered appreciation of beauty and labour, all of which greatly encourages a harmonious, supportive, and creative learning environment. To harmonise with the existing trees in the courtyard, the design team used green bricks, pebbles, pottery jars, and reclaimed decorative tiles from old buildings. Through meticulous craftsmanship, such as bricklaying techniques, they crafted every detail to create a space that conveys the simple yet culturally rich ambience of the art academy. Many functional elements were added to enhance the impression and experience of this courtyard space, which is ideal for hosting both leisure and learning activities such as cultural exhibitions, outdoor classes, design seminars, and class parties. The courtyard's multifunctional design not only boosts campus life but also supports environmental, literary, and activity-based education.
