In reaction to the environmental harms of chemical dyeing, this project revives mud dyeing, a traditional Taiwanese craft that uses local soil as a natural, sustainable dye. Rooted in cultural and sustainable heritage, it is reimagined through a multi-sensory book designed to preserve, educate, and inspire.
Created in collaboration with the Taiwan Mud Dyeing Cultural Heritage Studio, the book is structured around five chapters, each named after a colour: Grey, Dark Blue, Cinnabar, Persimmon, and Brown. These tones represent the outcomes of the dyeing process and important themes such as memory, technique, storytelling, innovation, and spirit.
Taiwan's diverse soils are showcased to challenge common perceptions of 'earth tones'. Their unique properties, when paired with local plants, produce vibrant and unexpected colours. A colour-coded structure informs the book's visual rhythm and expresses the rich potential of mud dyeing.
The book's design embraces a minimalist layout, offering white space and moments of pause. Detailed illustrations, photos, and stories are enhanced by textures and material cues, letting readers grasp the tactile nature of the craft. Printed on natural plant-fibre paper and bound in hand-dyed mud fabric, each copy carries its own textures and wrinkles, echoing the imperfections and warmth of craftsmanship.
