Metamorphosis

Metamorphosis is a collection of heavily transformed textile assemblages that are made from second-hand fabrics, collected as memorabilia from different countries. In her book Evocative Objects, Sherry Turkle said, “We think with the objects we love, and we love the objects we think with.” This idea sparked the motivation to look for found objects as sources of inspiration, and to reflect on the textures of our personal experiences. The work is created through a process of layering fabrics together, sewing and slashing to produce a colourful yet raw aesthetic quality of the cloth. The approach is akin to painting with fabrics, manipulating it by cutting and washing to agitate the fibres to create a heavily textured cloth, which contribute to the overall expressiveness of these textured visual objects. The textiles are made through additive, subtractive and transformative processes that evoke a potential to become something new. Metamorphosis can be used as colourful statement pieces for interior spaces. The wall hangings operate as abstract and tactile artworks that invite moments of touch. The unexpected mixing of colours and layers invite the viewer to appreciate and meditate on its kaleidoscopic quality. Metamorphosis encourages the viewer to notice the rhythm of colours, to touch the surfaces of entangled threads and density of the assemblage, and to reflect on our transformation in our world’s social fabric.
