Professional and Mobile

Progressive digital technologies are leading to the increasing democratisation of DJing. Where carefully curated record collections, built up over a long time, once used to be the DJ’s most precious tool, they have today been replaced by streaming services with millions of tracks that seamlessly integrate with DJ software and open up a panoply of new possibilities via digital decks. At the same time, DJ equipment is becoming lighter and more compact, right down to mobile all-in-one solutions. An example of the latter is the OMNIS-DUO system by AlphaTheta. With its built-in battery, the portability of the device makes it suitable for use in settings beyond the confines of bars and clubs such as open-air parties, at the beach – in other words, anywhere out and about. At 4.6 kg, the lightweight device with its moderate dimensions of 50 × 30.7 × 7.1 cm and rounded corners fits into a backpack and can also be held on the lap when “putting on” tracks. Its unconventional colour in indigo also makes it stand out. It was inspired by the colour of denim and gives it a real recognition factor. The device, in classic DJ style, features two decks and an impressively neatly structured, minimalist layout, underscoring the “to go” design philosophy. This minimalist approach is enabled by the built-in touch display from which most of the functions can be controlled. Here, users can also choose between a light and a dark mode, depending on the daytime. The OMNIS-DUO’s interface is pioneering and combines versatility with professional performance. Any Bluetooth-enabled speaker can be connected effortlessly; for bars or clubs, there is a powerful XLR output. Tracks can be read via USB stick, SD card or a connected laptop. If there is Wi-Fi access, playlists can be played wirelessly from PCs, smartphones, the cloud or from music streaming portals. As Bluetooth audio input from smartphones can be integrated in addition to prepared tracks, local audiences can actively participate in music selection and be invited to suggest tracks. “The OMNIS-DUO DJ system’s focus on mobile and even participatory usage scenarios is extremely future-oriented,” was the jury’s verdict. The jurors were impressed with the system and its clean, pared-back design which skilfully blends professional-grade performance with spontaneity.
