Sometimes the adoption of a purist appearance has more to do with technology than design. The minimalist aesthetic of the Panasonic Alpha Set is, to some measure, the result of an innovative control panel that is no larger than the palm of a hand. A rotary knob permits intuitive operation of the washing machine and dryer combination and has magnetic properties for convenient positioning on the elegant stainless-steel body. According to the manufacturer, this appliance is paving the way for the development of an intelligent, networked ecosystem from which appliances in other product segments will also benefit in the future. One of the challenges the developers faced was finding a suitable location for a microphone to enable additional voice control. Ultimately, it was discreetly embedded in the logo. Additional innovative features are hidden from view behind the fascinatingly sleek front in order to not detract from the overall aesthetic. They include a detergent dispenser integrated into the base, a hidden fabric softener compartment and a filter positioned in the loading area. The washer/dryer also has a generously dimensioned door to ensure that the interior is adequately ventilated when the machine is not in use. In the Panasonic Alpha appliances, the door automatically opens 2 cm at the end of the washing cycle to immediately start the ventilation process. “The Panasonic Alpha Set is impressive for its state-of-the-art technology and its distinctive purist appearance. Two of its fantastic features are the rotary knob and the integrated voice control for intuitive operation. The seamless integration of the door into the robust metal panelling conveys the impression of a very thoughtfully designed product,” commented the jurors. Another design innovation that contributed to the product’s elegant look is a compact compressor that was adapted from the automotive sector in order to fit the powerful heat pump system in the standard dimensions of a washing machine. This technology transfer is astonishing but not entirely unexpected since Studio F. A. Porsche was involved in the development as a long-standing Panasonic partner. Form follows function at its best.
