SUM

Miners are tasked with one the most challenging work in the world. Since miners are required to carry an inventory of tools and safety gears, the suit combines three equipment requirements: fall arrest harness, reflective vest, and mining belt. With a modified harness, compact suit design and additional hydration system, SUM improves miner’s safety, physical comfort, and working efficiency. Current fall arrest harnesses for miners could potentially lead to amputation due to the restricted blood flow to the legs if a falling accident occurs. SUM has a modified harness which automatically adjusts user to a seated position when they fall, redistributing the weight of the body to the whole thigh. Dehydration is a common issue for underground miners as well. As such, a water pocket in SUM provides water storage. This is supported by a hydration sensor on the suit’s collar that monitors the miner’s hydration level and gives warning when it is low. Red Dot Award: Design Concept | Concept | Safety & Protection
