Red Dot Award: Product Design

The Red Dot Award: Product Design awards the best products of the year. In 2020, participants with smart or innovative entries can be in with a chance of winning two awards.

About Red Dot Award: Product Design

The Red Dot Award: Product Design, whose origins date back to 1955, appraises the best products created every year. In roughly 50 categories, manufacturers and designers can enter their innovations in the competition. On Young Professionals Application Day, graduates of design courses who have obtained their academic qualifications within the past five years have the opportunity to take part in the draw for one of 50 free registration places. According to the motto “In search of good design and innovation”, the jury evaluates the entries and only awards a Red Dot to products that win them over with their high design quality.

Smart & innovative products win twice

Progress is what drives the economy. In particular in an era of digitisation, it is a decisive factor in making a company competitive and futureproof. For this reason, progressive entries will be given an even larger platform in the Red Dot Award: Product Design this year. From now on, participants who register an innovative or smart product can win two awards in the competition.
To do this, they simply complete a second registration – either in the “Smart Products” or in the “Innovative Products” metacategory – after entering the product in one of the roughly 50 categories. As part of the evaluation process, the jury will then inspect the entries in a second walkthrough with a different focus. Aspects such as the level of innovation, technical refinements or changes in the language of form play a role for innovative entries. By contrast, for smart products the experts will be looking at the interaction design, connectivity and the system as a whole. If the entries submitted win over the jury not only in their category but also as a smart or innovative product, the laureates will win not one but two awards.

From fashion and accessories to consumer electronics and vehicles, household appliances and furniture – you can choose between 49 different categories when participating in the Red Dot Award: Product Design.
