The intention in designing this poster for an exhibition on the black artist Jean-Michel Basquiat was to render a notion of his tragic life situation. In an art world shaped by whites, the artist gave artistic expression to the “horror of a black life”. In the poster, this is reflected in the upper and lower parts of the picture bordering a blue square in between. This makes the black man placed behind them look as though he were in a prison. Information is reduced to Basquiat’s areas of activity and focuses on his only short artistic life.
