Chairligraphy Series I

Back Download

While the Chinese art of calligraphy has inspired generations of artists for centuries, the starting point of this poster series was the designer’s fascination with chairs – two subjects that seem to be incompatible at first, but which the designer made the themes of his artistic creations. Set against a black background and recognisable only upon closer inspection, the posters reveal the subtle three-dimensional shapes of several hand-drawn chairs, which have been superimposed with old Chinese characters in white to create a strong contrast. Interestingly, the two-dimensional characters thus acquire a three-dimensional effect, causing the eye to constantly switch between two layers of perceived depth. As a combination of Ming-style chairs and classic Chinese calligraphy, “Chairligraphy” was created in the hope that the viewer could sense and feel the smoothness and strength of the calligraphic stroke. Statement by the jury »This poster series distinguishes itself through the skilful merging of Chinese roots with personal taste and the combination of typography with construction techniques. Both forms of expression enter into a kind of dialogue, alternately tracing the lines of the characters or those of the chairs. The actual coalescence effused is not only about beauty but also has a deeper meaning, inspired by Ming Dynasty aesthetics.«
