The Paper Skin

Back

The design of this packaging is centred on visualising the high quality of the packaging paper “Constellation Jade” by Italian paper manufacturer Fedrigoni. This paper possesses extraordinary material properties, surviving heavy abrasion, withstanding extreme temperatures and resisting aggressive liquids. In the conception of “The Paper Skin”, the qualities of the paper themselves were employed and visualised in a sample book in the shape of a noble packaging for the Leica X2 camera. In so doing, a surprising formal aspect emerged in that the familiar iconographic leather band of Leica cameras was officially replaced in this limited edition by a band made of this paper. The subtle design idea thus turned a luxury brand into an ambassador for a rather low interest product and created enormous interest among a design-minded target group.

Statement by the Jury

The idea of “The Paper Skin” emerged as a perfect design implementation. The packaging not only serves as a storage box for samples, it also creates a very powerful image based on the metal and silver appearance. When opened, users experience quality and style, aspects that are also conveyed through the type of paper. All design elements were developed with a clear focus on the product and merged symbiotically.
