This diploma thesis is a response to the question of how the somewhat dull topic of “waste disposal and recycling” can be presented in a more consumer-friendly and attractive way. Loud informational graphics, which vividly illustrate the content, and imaginatively staged photography show our “daily waste” from a different angle in order to not only attract attention but also raise awareness of the issues of consumption and waste. Produced in a newspaper format, the work picks up on the German Waste Management Act and, accordingly, is divided into the three categories of “avoidance of waste”, “recycling” and “waste disposal”. Consistently printed on recycled paper and featuring a plain and overall clearly arranged layout, the work communicates its content in an informative and attractive manner. Statement by the jury »The dynamically staged, large-format photographs and graphics illustrate to poignant effect how much food is wasted every year. The implementation is highly successful and raises concern by turning the topic into a clear message – the mindlessness with which resources are wasted is further stressed through the fact that waste is never depicted as disgusting, nor shown in clearly repulsive images.«
