Beacon is a tangible light object designed to overcome common accessibility barriers at restaurant tables. Blind and low-vision (BLV) diners often face two key challenges in restaurants: navigating digital menus and communicating with servers. Although digital menus can be accessed with screen readers, many users struggle to locate and scan QR codes due to inconsistent placement and poor lighting. Requesting assistance independently is also difficult, as diners typically rely on visual cues to signal servers. Beacon addresses these issues by standardising QR code placement and guiding users through its ergonomic, tactile form. A discreet flip-to-signal feature enables diners to request service independently. These core functions are supported by thoughtful design details to further improve accessibility for BLV diners. Dual-direction lighting casts warm light downward while backlighting the QR code above, enabling easy scanning even in dim environments. A concave top invites touch, and a braille marker helps guide phone alignment. Designed with minimal parts for cost-effective production, Beacon offers a scalable, inclusive solution that enhances accessibility and autonomy for BLV diners.
