Blooming Bamboo home

BLOOMING BAMBOO HOME is a housing solution that guards against destructive natural phenomenon such as such as rainstorms, sweeping floods, landslides, droughts that frequently occur in Vietnam. Using bamboo modules in two standard diameters and lengths, each house is assembled by bolting, binding and hanging. The result is a homogenous architectural structure that is resistant to floods that rise as high as 1.5 metres. The designer is experimenting with the possibility of a higher 3-metres-high flood-resistant threshold. Besides being flood resistant, every unit of housing is designed with a freedom of purpose. It could serve as a house, a school, a medical facility, or community centre. The modular units can be expanded or replicated according to needs. The housing cover is finished with regionally sourced materials that would suit the climate—small bamboo, bamboo wattle, fibreboard, coconut leaf, and others. Each unit can be completed in 25 days, and with mass production of the modules in place, the cost of building every unit would only cost $2500. It is an affordable housing solution for people living in severe conditions and a remarkable contribution to the ecological development and economic stabilisation of the region.
