The Bowers & Wilkins Diamond surround sound system, with its powerful amplifier channels and digital sound processing, provides an immersive music experience in the BMW XM. The jury praised the fact that the up to 20 speakers distributed throughout the car with a total output of 1,475 watts can simulate the acoustics of a concert hall, recording studio or other spaces, with a measurement microphone providing dynamic equalisation. The speakers’ stainless-steel grilles feature an etched hole pattern with a Fibonacci spiral in the centre surrounded by concentric circles. This pattern creates an illusion of depth, although the material is only 0.5 mm thick.
