“I want to ride my bicycle” – Freddie Mercury sang it, the Dutch truly live it. With over 22 million bicycles out of a population of 17 million, the country holds a world record. With the Cayo e-bike, Dutch bicycle manufacturer Gazelle is tapping into this deeply rooted cycling culture – and at the same time building a bridge to the future of urban mobility. Formally, the Cayo combines the familiar silhouette of a normal bicycle with contemporary e-bike technology. The mid-motor is almost invisibly concealed in the down tube, while the battery is elegantly integrated into the underside of the frame. The frame follows a clear, minimalist design language with straight tubes, smooth transitions and sharply defined lines that give it a striking yet elegant appearance. For a minimalist look, the Cayo dispenses with visible screw connections and superfluous design elements. Natural-looking details such as the integrated seat clamp and the discreetly placed Gazelle logo on the inner side of the frame testify to the high level of design precision. The cockpit also follows the principle of integrated minimalism: handlebars, stem and cable routing form an almost uninterrupted line. The conventional display is replaced by a smartphone that is charged wirelessly directly on the handlebar – also neatly integrated into the overall concept. “You can tell that the Cayo comes from a culture in which bicycles are omnipresent in everyday life. A great deal of attention to detail has gone into this e-bike,” said the jury enthusiastically. The ergonomics of the Cayo are tailored to city traffic. The slightly forward-leaning seating position ensures an active, comfortable posture and a good overview. Continuously variable gears or a single-speed option project riding pleasure with suitability for everyday use. The jury’s verdict: “The Cayo combines everyday life on two wheels with minimalist aesthetics, technical innovation and urban elegance. Despite its advanced technology, it remains discreet and authentic – it fits the brand, respects tradition and points the way to the future of urban e-mobility. The balanced geometry merges comfort with sportiness, offering versatile riding dynamics. Clearly defined lines, consistent design integration and the absence of superfluous elements characterise the timeless look.”
