The steadily increasing share of online sales and new guidelines for sales and shipping via online shops are just some of the many reasons that prompted Gardena, a market leader for practical garden products, to optimise the packaging design of its shipping boxes. To meet the requirements of e-commerce shipping, the new packaging was designed according to the credo “simple but effective”. In addition, to communicate what the claim “Realize Your Gardening Dreams” and thus the world of gardening as a whole promise, lovingly drawn monochrome illustrations were created showing a small house with a garden, flowers, bushes and a path. These self-explanatory sceneries were laid out and arranged to run along the edges of each box, enclosing and connecting all sides of the hexagonal packaging without being obscured by shipping labels or packing tape during use. Depending on the shape and size of a particular box, the design-specific blocks and modules can be rearranged without changing the basic look to reflect the brand and its values in a coherent way.Statement by the juryThe story told by the e-commerce packaging design for Gardena is appealing and consistently implemented. The fact that a manufacturer of gardening tools relies on sustainable cardboard and sketches the vision of a romantic spot of nature on its packaging is a very coherent concept that is as straightforward as it is convincing. The landscape that stretches across the edges of the cardboard boxes is another beautiful detail in this design for high-quality tools.
