In 1968, Grand Seiko developed Japan’s first watch with the 10-beat automatic movement, which achieved an amazingly high level of timekeeping accuracy. This watch was reviewed in 2009 and further improved with the current model. “While respecting and exploring our roots, we respond to the changing times and have evolved our watch into shapes, colours and forms suitable for modern lifestyle” – this is how the designers describe the results of the design process, which aims to transfer the notions of the previous models in following an evolutionary approach and creating something new at the same time. The exterior design was refined to be more practical and more aesthetically pleasing. Central to the redesign was the idea of celebrating the Japanese spiritual concept of time. The structured and organic appearance of the dial is inspired by the beauty of the birch forests in Iwate Prefecture, Japan, where the company’s watches are manufactured. Featuring an optimised movement that is more than ten per cent thinner, this wristwatch offers better and more ergonomically balanced wearing comfort. Its case is designed with wide lugs and a low centre of gravity, making it rest lightly and securely on the wrist. The interplay between a perfect mirror finish with Zaratsu polishing and a brushed finish lends the case a calm and harmonious shimmering appearance.
