Filigree and Flexible

3D metal printing is already standard in industries such as medical engineering and aerospace, especially where prototypes are concerned. As processes become ever more precise and efficient, this manufacturing technology of the future is also of increasing interest to other sectors. Now GROHE, a leading global brand for holistic bathroom solutions, has employed this additive process for the development of innovative fittings again and pushed its capabilities to the limit for the conceptual GROHE SPA Icon 3D collection occasionally looks so delicate that it is hard to believe the components are capable of carrying water. That is particularly true of the sculptural shower head with its biophilic form which resembles the extending stems of a plant. When water streams from these fine crowns, it almost looks like an optical illusion. The basin mixer, which forks to form a spout and a small shelf, recalls a shoot with a seed leaf sprouting up from the ground. GROHE has made skilful use of the possibilities afforded by 3D metal printing as this technology is particularly well suited to replicating organic, flowing and delicate forms. What is almost impossible with soldering or welding techniques can here be constructed seamlessly in one piece, consuming minimal amounts of material. Layer by layer, a fine metal granulate is melted and fused with a laser in an additive process, which is how even ultra-thin components with complex features can be produced and directly integrated. The jury was full of praise. “The GROHE SPA Icon 3D collection has managed to redefine what is possible in the bathroom fittings sector thanks to an advanced production technology like 3D metal printing.” It went on to say, “The collection is poetic, a bold statement that opens up a world of possibilities, and combines this with GROHE’s proven, extremely high quality standards.” The collection is also pioneering for its vision of ultimate adaptability. In principle, a wide range of different versions of the fittings or entirely new forms can be created directly from the 3D CAD file, without involving high costs or taking a lot of time for the development of shapes and tools. That leaves plenty of scope for imagining sustainable, personalised products.
