Anyone who designs innovation faces a particular challenge: truly new things are rarely understood immediately – they are too different from the familiar. This makes it all the more important to create a design that provides orientation and transforms technical complexity into intuitive accessibility. The Nokia 5G 360 Camera does just that – and shows where camera technology is heading. Its task is not only to observe, but also to enable situational awareness, remote control and decision-making. Rigid monitoring systems are replaced by an immersive interface that combines 8K video data, spatial sound and ultra-low latency 5G connectivity. Whether in industrial facilities or for live broadcasts, the camera replaces complex networks of individual devices with a single, intelligent system. It can be seamlessly integrated into industrial work processes and opens up new possibilities for remote monitoring and teleoperation. In combination with the RXRM software, the camera becomes a real interface for immersive collaboration. It enables intuitive control, integrates AI-supported analyses and extends the range of human perception in real time – a next-generation human-machine interface. In terms of design, it follows the principle of “Quiet Intelligence” in that function and presence should be experienced intuitively without forcing itself into the foreground. The cylindrical shape, the recessed lenses, the passive cooling and the clear connection architecture combine to create a precisely manufactured, robust object. Everything is designed to maximise function and minimise visual presence. The jury was visibly impressed: “The Nokia 5G 360 Camera is not only a technically sophisticated device, but also a pioneering product. With its clear form, high technical density and remarkable reduction, a complex system becomes a tool that enables new forms of work – from remote monitoring to teleoperation. Universally applicable and intuitive to use, the camera shows the future of immersive interfaces – and is thus an example of how design makes technological change tangible.” The camera not only changes the way we see – it also changes the way we make decisions. And this is perhaps its greatest innovation.
