There is no doubt that developments in the field of artificial intelligence will change our attitude to technical devices. To date, interactions with AI primarily take place via app-based user interfaces on smartphones or computers. The rabbit r1 personal AI assistant breaks new ground. The development of the hardware and operating system focused solely on AI integration and on redesigning human-machine interactions. With its compact form factor of 7.8 × 7.8 × 1.3 cm, rabbit r1 easily fits into any palm. Its rounded form, bright orange colour and minimalist controls give the device a retro feel – an appealing contrast to its future-oriented technology. The system is operated with voice controls, just like a walkie-talkie, and uses multiple AI models. When the push-to-talk button is pressed, the rabbit on the display pricks up its ears – just one example of the playful user experience – and users can then interact with the AI. Answers are given via the loudspeaker and are also shown on the touch display. Pressing the button twice activates a 360-degree rotating camera. The device not only takes photos but also identifies and interprets image contents. If it records the contents of the fridge, for instance, the assistant can be asked for suitable recipes. Both voice and display style can be customised while the magic camera AI image generator can modify photos that have already been taken as required – further proof that this tool is not only useful but also aims to be fun. All sound and text files as well as all images are furthermore stored on the rabbithole web portal and are readily accessible. The jury was impressed. “With rabbit r1, we have witnessed the emergence of an unprecedented device for personal use that offers intuitive, convenient and one-handed operation and has found a distinct, compelling form factor for voice-operated AI. It also opens up an exciting field for future design innovations.” Since its launch, rabbit r1 has undergone continuous upgrades. Its adaptive Large Action Model (LAM), which allows the device to interact with apps and websites, enables it to perform an ever-growing number of actions.
