These illustrations interpret a historical travelogue known in Taiwan as the “Small Sea Travel Diaries”. The diary documents the personal experiences of Yu Yonghe, a Chinese secretarial officer who was sent to Taiwan to search for sulphur. Corresponding to the figurative language of the book, the illustrations depict mythical landscapes, yet also show various customs and traditions of ancient Taiwan. In a filigree manner and with rich colouring, Yu’s adventurous stories are vividly brought to life.
