“The development of the Valtra S6 is a true story from ugly duckling to proud swan,” says Kimmo Wihinen, Industrial Design & User Experience Manager, referring to the long process of merging form and technology into a harmonious unit. At the beginning, it was only clear that the S Series would comprise Valtra’s largest and most powerful machines to date – the technical requirements were correspondingly high. However, the biggest challenge for the designers lay in the proportions. The cab and engine compartment had to be harmonised despite the massive technology. In order to make the bonnet more compact, the engine and cooling system were fundamentally optimised – a development step that took several years and required numerous full-scale models. At the same time, the lighting systems had to be integrated in such a way that they met both the legal requirements and the aesthetic demands. And last but not least, the tractor not only had to be functional, but also emotionally convincing. The result is an impressive body design that communicates the machine’s performance. Oversized intake and exhaust pipes, customised work lights and the striking V-shaped radiator grille characterise the appearance. A newly developed lighting unit combines LED driving lights, daytime running lights and work lights in one module and forms a central element of the new visual identity. The narrow and sloping bonnet improves all-round visibility and contributes significantly to the balanced proportions and dynamic silhouette. In the interior, operating concepts such as the SmartTouch interface ensure ergonomics and user-friendliness. Under high pressure of expectation, the “ugly duckling” has finally become a “proud swan”. The jury’s verdict: “With clear lines, reduction and an independent, organically inspired design language, the S series manages the balancing act between powerful presence and contemporary elegance. Functionality, safety and formal clarity are combined at a high level. Innovative details and optimised ergonomics increase suitability for everyday use. The choice of colours and materials underlines the modern, unmistakable look of the series.”
