Back to the Future

Social media, AI and countless design platforms can certainly spark inspiration. But some of the most compelling product innovations are born from a deep engagement with design history. The X table frame is a contemporary interpretation of a time-honoured construction – a striking marriage of post-war functionalist principles and modern-day aesthetics. This radical simplicity not only defines its distinctive visual identity but also supports X’s multifunctionality. Whether used as a desk or workbench, a writing table or dining surface – as a stand-alone piece or in a series – the frame meets the growing demand for flexible furniture in home and work environments. In creating the frame from both round and rectangular tubing, the product designers combined the strengths of both forms. Rectangular profiles are easier to fold into a defined angle during frame production, while round tubes are easier to telescope for individual height adjustment during use. “Rectangular cross-sections also fit more precisely with round ones, as the resulting seams are straighter and therefore easier to weld,” the design team explained. The frame’s impressive stability – not immediately apparent from its airy appearance – results from smartly balanced material proportions and robust joints. The spirit of functionalism is evident not only in the respectful use of materials but also in the smooth, efficient production process, echoing the movement’s ethos of design for all. Today’s retail behaviour also plays a key role in the concept: as flat-pack furniture, the X frame simplifies online order logistics. It fits into a compact box, making it well-suited to increasingly mobile lifestyles. “X is a rare example of how powerful low-tech can be. It is engineered for function yet is so full of character that it becomes iconic. The precise workmanship, premium materials and thoughtful construction are truly impressive,” the jury concluded.
