+CLOCK is an automatic pill dispenser that functions like a clock but distributes pills at the time set by the user. The design concept is a Red Dot: Best of the Best winner from the Domestic Aid and Home Appliances category and is among the top five concepts in the Red Dot Award: Design Concept 2022. Product designer Ju Chan Ho shares more with Red Dot.
Tell us about the project +CLOCK - Automatic pill dispenser?
+CLOCK presents healthy habits at the right timing. The number and frequency of pills that many modern people have to take are increasing, but it is difficult to take them regularly for various reasons.To solve this problem, +CLOCK looks and functions like a clock, but it also functions as an automatic pill dispenser, distributing pills automatically to create a routine for the user.
How important is the role of design in projects like +CLOCK - Automatic pill dispenser?
First, it had to be based on the functional consideration of the storage and distribution of the pill dispensers, the basic function that the pill dispenser should have. However, I felt that this circular dispenser structure was difficult to fit naturally into the user's space by itself. So when I thought about the tools that are most common, not awkward, and essential in the user's space, I came up with the meaning of clocks in the space of life. A clock literally tells a person the time. Most naturally. The function of the pill dispenser and the contextual combination of the clock were the best approaches to creating a routine for taking pills naturally in the user's life and space.
What does winning a design award, especially the Red Dot mean to you?
I can confidently say that one of the dreams of all designers is that they have their names on the Red Dot Design Award winners' list. I think it is a great honor. It's probably a big asset as I'm starting my design career. I think it's also fun to prove one's design language to the world when I live my entire career in design. In that sense, this Red Dot Design Award is a great opportunity to show and prove my design language to many people.
