Based on the history of the Orthopaedic Hospital of western Switzerland, founded in Lausanne in 1876, this book illustrates the advances of orthopaedics as a discipline and technique from the mid 18th century to the present day. By putting into context the situation of orthopaedics in Switzerland and Western countries, the book addresses issues of professional identities, institutional strategies and medical cultures, whose complex history reflects current health issues. The result is a classic and elegantly designed book that comes along in black and white combined with only one colour, a bright orange. The main content is rhythmically interspersed by a generous amount of quotations that flow out independently from the text, juxtaposing the layout in a pleasant manner. In addition to many vivid, mostly historical photos, footnotes are a key element, standing out vertically in the centre of the pages supporting all the content, just like a spine.
