Red Dot Award: Design Concept

Autonomous systems. Intelligent machines.

From industrial robotics to AI-powered automation, designers are exploring how intelligent systems might support new forms of work and collaboration. Rather than replacing human activity entirely, many of these concepts consider how machines could assist with complex, repetitive or physically demanding tasks. The following Ready For Market projects from the Red Dot Award: Design Concept 2025 examine different possibilities for human–machine interaction and autonomous production systems.

Chopstick – Autonomous Embodied AI Robot

Chopstick, developed by Novasdyne in Hong Kong, is a productivity tool that explores how swarm intelligence and embodied AI could support modern workplaces. The system enables multiple robots to coordinate tasks while interacting with human workers, assisting with repetitive or hazardous operations while allowing people to focus on supervision and decision-making. The project received the Red Dot: Best of the Best in the Robotics category.

Circus Autonomy One (CA-1)

Circus Autonomy One (CA-1), developed by Circus SE and Selic Industriedesign in Germany, is an industrial-scale autonomous meal production robot designed to operate without direct human intervention. Integrating robotics, cooking automation and operational management, the system addresses challenges such as labour shortages, food waste and operational efficiency in large-scale food production. The project received the Red Dot: Best of the Best in the Robotics category.

Figure 02

Figure 02, developed by Figure AI in the United States for industrial environments, is a humanoid robot redesigned with artificial intelligence, computer vision, sensors and actuators with new capabilities. Figure aims to develop robots that enhance efficiency and quality of life for humans, and Figure 02 brings it a step closer. The project is a Red Dot winner in the Robotics category.

The future of production

Taken together, these concepts illustrate different approaches to autonomous systems in production environments. From robotic swarms to automated kitchens and humanoid industrial robots, they reflect ongoing explorations into how humans and intelligent machines may work alongside one another within future industrial settings. How might your next concept shape the future of work?
