Red Dot: What distinguishes the knives in the Kuhn Rikon Black Coated Knives Series?

We are delighted to have created a knife series that not only performs impeccably but also looks stylish in the kitchen. I’d say that the key features we wanted to bring to this range are a cool, modern aesthetic combined with a high-quality cutting experience.

The set also includes a knife block and a chopping board. But was the main focus initially on the knives?

The knives are the centrepiece, but we wanted to create an all-inclusive solution. Right from the outset, we aimed to develop a complete set of premium-quality knives plus thoughtfully designed accessories in order to offer consumers a holistic cooking experience.

Am I mistaken or have you incorporated aspects of Japanese design?

No, you’re absolutely right. The straight line above the handle and the way it is connected to the blade create a clean and sleek appearance reminiscent of Japanese cutting implements. We also use Japanese steel for the blades to enhance the cutting experience.

The black blades are also unusual. Was this a purely aesthetic decision?

The black blades are definitely a striking feature. However, although they give the knives a uniquely beautiful look, the decision wasn’t purely aesthetic. The black coating also has a functional purpose because it increases durability and prevents food from sticking to the blade.
