Tom Hegen — Overview for insights.

Tom Hegen is a German photographer whose speciality is aerial photography that documents the traces that humankind leaves behind it on the earth’s surface. In precise visual compositions, he gives an overview of the places where the earth’s resources are extracted, refined and used, and provides insight into the complex relationship between humans and the natural environment. His work is displayed in individual and joint exhibitions in such countries as Germany, the UK, Italy, Belgium, South Korea and China. In 2018, he published his first illustrated book entitled “HABITAT” and, in 2020, his second book “AIRPORTS” was released by Hatje Cantz.

Red Dot: How would you define good communication design?
Tom Hegen: Visual communication that is inspiring, moving and gets its content across.

To what extent do you think new technologies are changing design?
Design will become more varied, braver and more experimental. The frontiers between disciplines will blur even more.

Why did you become a designer?
Because I am passionately inquisitive.

How do you remain creative and continue to come up with innovative solutions?
I keep on discovering the world around me and look at everyday things from a different perspective.

In 2021, Tom Hegen was awarded a Red Dot: Best of the Best for its book “AIRPORTS” in the Red Dot Award: Brands & Communication Design.
