Red Dot Design-Ranking 2016 – outstanding performances by institutions
The Red Dot Design Ranking for design concepts tracks and measures the success of an organisation in producing exciting new design concepts over a period of time. Released by the Red Dot Institute, it consists of four honourary lists: Companies, Design Studios, Universities in Asia Pacific and Universities in America & Europe. In 2016, the Red Dot Award: Design Concept received 4,698 entries from 60 countries. The Red Dot jury of 21 international design experts awarded five institutions with the Red Dot: Best of the Best, in recognition of the outstanding effort and quality designs.
“ENSCI - Les Ateliers” received the Red Dot: Best of the Best
The “PAPIER - MACHINE” was recognised by the international jury to be an outstanding work of design. It is a book collection of twelve electronic toys made out of paper – all meant to be cut, drawn, folded, built and destroyed. Each toy explains one or several electronic principles. Submitted by ENSCI - Les Ateliers, it was awarded the Red Dot: Best of the Best and further nominated for the Red Dot: Luminary.
The Red Dot: Luminary is selected among the Red Dot: Best of the Best winners. This award serves as an inspiration to aspire towards. The institution also achieved the second position in this year’s Red Dot Design Ranking for Universities - America & Europe, for its sustained efforts in design excellence. “L’ENSCI – Les Ateliers, an National French school entirely dedicated to industrial creation, is ecstatic and proud to place second in the American and European school ranking. This 2016 Red Dot ranking reflects the creation and innovation of ENSCI – Les Ateliers students’ projects, supported by expert teachers, designers, and pedagogic teams, to achieve their unique style, DNA of ENSCI – Les Ateliers at Paris.”, said Françoise Hugont, responsible for studio documentation at ENSCI – Les Ateliers.
Further institutions received the Red Dot: Best of the Best
Other institutions awarded the Red Dot: Best of the Best are the Savannah College of Art and Design with “Gomo”, a tool designed to ease stress in children who are hospitalised, the National Taipei University of Technology with the winning concept “Circle Life”, a smart wearable bracelet device for diabetes patients, and the Dalian Nationalities University with “Climber”, a safe climbing solution for electrical workers. Rounding up the Red Dot: Best of the Best winning concepts by institutions are two entries from Massey University: The toolkit for designers “An Insight into Sight” and the cookbook “Nothing To Eat”. Pro Vice-Chancellor of the Massey University, Professor Claire Robinson says the ranking is validation of Massey’s international excellence in design. “This is the highest international design ranking reached by any New Zealand design school ever.”
The Red Dot Award: Design Concept 2017 offers designers, companies and universities from all over the world the opportunity to enter their product visions and put their whole creative potential to the test. The subsequent late submission period runs until 24 May.
