The 2020 Creative Expo Taoyuan took place in a city known for its ethnic diversity and achievements in industry, aviation, transport and agriculture. The venue chosen was the historic Matsu New Village, a cultural epitome of veteran life and ongoing history. The overarching curatorial concept, which incorporated seven administrative bureaus as “Places on the Move”, was titled “RUNNING TAOYUAN” to convey the idea of progress through the symbolism of running and movement. To coordinate the old of the neighbourhood with the new in design and art, and to connect the indoor and outdoor spaces, galvanised pipes and traditional yarn were used as a kind of guidance system. The three most striking colours, pink, green and blue, served as visual cues, while greenery was the key element representing nature and rounding off the overall space and theme. Artificial lighting allowed the venue to convey very different impressions by day and by night, transforming the celebratory event into a gateway to the past that invited visitors to discover the special qualities of the city with all their senses.Statement by the juryThe design of 2020 Creative Expo Taoyuan convinces with its contemporary and at the same time independent approach, in which it combines the past of the historic district and its architecture with the new and innovative of modern design and creativity. The effect of the colours and especially the lighting that accompanied and guided visitors through the various rooms contributes to an immersive experience of the event with its diverse exhibits.
